Inspection of Totalizing Meters in the Humboldt River Basin

CARSON CITY, NV – This fall, September through November, staff from Nevada Division of Water Resources (NDWR), Office of the State Engineer, will be inspecting wells for compliance with State Engineer’s Order No. 1251. This order required totalizing meters to be installed and maintained within all Hydrographic Basins located within the Humboldt River Region by February 1st, 2016.  Staff will visit permitted wells, excluding domestic wells, stockwater wells, and wells that have been permitted for annual duties of 5.0 acre-feet or less.

State Engineer’s Order No. 1251, available at https://images.water.nv.gov/images/Orders/1251o.pdf, requires quarterly reporting of monthly meter readings for all permitted wells subject to the Order. The purpose for requiring totalizing meters and data reporting, is to accurately determine the amount of groundwater pumped within the Humboldt River Region. The data obtained from the reporting of meter readings will assist NDWR in evaluating claims of impacts to existing water rights within the Humboldt River Region and ensure the proper management of the region’s limited water resources.

The order requires water right owners to file ‘Totalizing Meter Form 7001F’ with the State Engineer’s Office. This form can be obtained from the NDWR website, available at https://water.nv.gov/uploads/meters-database-docs/7001F_TotalizingMeter.pdf, or by emailing metersupport@water.nv.gov.

The mission of NDWR is to responsibly manage Nevada’s limited water resources in accordance with State law and best available science.

Please visit NDWR’s website at water.nv.gov to review the order, as well as to retrieve ‘Totalizing Meter Form 7001F’. You can also call the office at (775) 684-2800 to request the form by mail or for any other assistance and/or questions.
