Dams and Dam Safety

                   Report an Emergency

The Nevada Division of Water Resources oversees dams to safeguard life and property, with jurisdiction over those reaching or exceeding 20 feet in height or 20 acre-feet of storage. This regulatory role involves reviewing plans, design reports, and specifications for new dams, as well as modifications and repairs to existing dams to ensure that dams are designed and constructed in accordance with both legal design criteria and the latest industry standards.

Dam owners are responsible for maintaining and repairing their dams safely and at their own expense, with the Division requiring written approval for any construction, repair, or alteration. Periodic visual inspections are conducted to ensure dams are operated and maintained securely. Currently, the state has jurisdiction over 650 dams.
